HD Homerun – Cut The Cord!
For those of you that are trying to cut the cord, I have found the perfect option for the whole house. It’s called HD Homerun by https://www.silicondust.com. This amazing little box takes the antenna signal from your roof’s antenna, plugs into your router, and “Digitizes” it so you can view it on your tablets, computers, ps4’s, Xboxes ect on your network without having to pay for access apps and all that.
There is no configuring whatso ever other than downloading an app to your smart device.
Basically what this means is, without running wires to every tv in your house, as long as you have a firetv or streaming device of some sort, you can watch Live TV while connected in your home.
HD Homerun DOES offer a Premium Channel Streaming options as well, but I am here talking about the free easy stuff for the moment. (of course you have to buy the HD Homerun Box)
They offer the Connect Duo for $99 and the Connect Quatro for $149. The difference is the DUO can stream to two separate tv’s, and the Quatro can stream up to 4 different TV’s at the same time. Each TV watching something completely different in each room.

Security cameras and their costs to install
Found a great article on Security Camera equipment and installation costs through HomeAdvisor.com. Read below or click on the link. https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/safety-and-security/install-a-surveillance-camera/
More than ever before, surveillance systems are available in a variety of types and prices to provide a feeling of safety and security to a wide range of homeowners. The average cost of a security system and installation is $1,381. Due to the variations in types and quality of cameras, the installation typically ranges between $723 and $2,072. Wired systems cost less for parts but more for installation, at $150-$200 per camera, compared to their wireless counterparts. The good news: installing any type of system can save costs on home insurance.
There are two choices to make: wireless or wired IP cameras, or CCTV cameras. However, many other factors contribute to the final setup. Most systems have multiple cameras with either cloud (NVR) or on-site (DVR) storage. Sometimes they include motion detectors, improved resolution, professional monitoring, and night vision capabilities. Increased options mean increased complexity, and increased costs. Ultimately, your needs and preferences are going to dictate the final bill.

Installation Costs
Over the years, security camera prices have plummeted, making them an affordable necessity. An average security system installation will cost about $1500. But the price for professional installation can vary drastically depending on system type and number of cameras. On top of equipment costs, each camera will range between $100 to $200 for professional installation. A system designed for DIY installation will cost you nothing but time, if you have the tools. Whether you end up going the DIY route or hiring a pro, an initial consultation will help you understand your exact needs based on the requirements of your home. A consultation is usually free. The size and type will depend on many factors:
- The Size of Your Home: The more area, the more cameras needed. You’ll also need higher quality with better resolution and field of vision for larger areas.
- Security Needs: Ranging from a couple cameras to monitor your children to 360-degree coverage both inside and outside your home to deter criminal activity.
- External or Internal: Internal cameras don’t need to be weatherproof and are often less expensive than external varieties.
- Wired or Wireless: Wires make for a much tougher install. Professional help is recommended.
- Monitored or Unmonitored: A security service adds to installation complexities but provides 24-hour monitoring and other upgrades at a monthly fee.
Which should you go with and where should they be placed? Consulting with a professional can help you understand what works best for your home, family, and budget.
Wired System – $150 – $200
Though the installation runs higher than wireless averaging about $150 to $200 per camera the elements of wired systems are more affordable. Because holes will be drilled, wires added, and conduit put in place, hiring a contractor is typically necessary. Beyond the upfront expenditure, the only real drawback is fixed locations. The pros may outweigh the cons. Wired systems cannot be hacked remotely, jammed, and have power built in often with battery backups for power outages.
Wireless System – $100
Wireless systems are easy to install, making them the choice for DIY projects. A DIY install will run you $0 with professional work only about $100 per camera. They’re also easy to move and almost always offer remote access. Drawbacks include no direct power source and must be installed within your home’s wireless network range to function correctly. They often have lower resolution than wired counterparts and can be hacked remotely. Wireless models are also subject to signal interference.

Security System and Equipment Prices
Do you want NVR or DVR to record the video in your home? Would you like your system monitored or unmonitored? That depends on whether you go with a CCTV or IP system and the type and quality of cameras you end up purchasing.
Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) about $70 – $300
This is a system that typically works independently of the internet cameras record video and store it in a location. These are either monitored locally or store video on a physical Digital Video Recorder (DVR). CCTV packages start out as little as $70 to $340 per camera depending on additional features, like high definition and larger digital storage. Large homes and businesses often us CCTV. You can connect the DVR to the internet which allows for remote viewing but also opens it up to hacking.
Internet Protocol (IP) – from $60 to $300
IP cameras are almost always wireless and connect directly to the internet, making them the choice for DIY installations. They broadcast video over your local network and usually store video digitally on a Network Video Recorder (NVR). However, this makes them susceptible to both hacking and internet outages. IP systems are easily configurable and expandable and often come with better features, like high resolution and night vision.
Types of Security Cameras
Camera type will affect the final cost equation. You may need different styles depending on location and security requirements.
Type | Price | Features |
Dummy | $15 each |
|
Dome | $100 – $150 |
|
Hidden | $100 – $150 |
|
Bullet | $100 |
|
Box | $100 (includes installation) |

Other Factors That Affect Cost
Upgrades are often needed to meet security requirements. What good is a security camera that can’t see? These will often increase cost, but leave you with a system that works. Unique angles, lighting, and coverage areas create a need for different types of cameras, increased resolution, night vision, motion detection, and other upgrades.
Placement determines necessary equipment upgrades like wide angle lenses, night vision, weatherproofing, and concealment. More cameras with higher resolution will require larger DVRs and NVRs. Know what you need before you install. Research which includes consulting a licensed professional installer provides the clearest understanding of what you’ll need and where you’ll need it.
Indoor vs Outdoor
Price varies between indoor and outdoor video surveillance. Indoor types don’t need to be weatherproof and often have a limited range and resolution. They are often of the smaller variety, usually using hidden, bullet, or dome styles. External types often need better visibility and durability both deter possible criminal activity. Typically, cameras used outside the home can see farther and have better resolution costing an average of $100 each vs. their indoor counterparts starting at $60. Both will need an additional average of $100 each to install.
Resolution
Security camera resolution is measured in television lines (tvl) though are often advertised by the more common 480p, 720p, and 1080p resolution terms. The higher the resolution, the higher the price, the clearer the image. What resolution you need depends on how you’ll use your system.
- Low Resolution – $100 anything below 1080p definition. These run around $100 each. These types are useful for areas where details, like faces and writing, aren’t really necessary. For systems set up to monitor what kids or a housekeeper are doing, low definition is the choice.
- High Resolution – $100 – $300 those at or above 1080p definition add an additional $100 to $300 to a standard low definition camera. When you need a clear picture of a person, license plate, or another identifying mark, go with a higher definition (HD). These are recommended for any entry points to your home. Higher resolution also means more bandwidth and larger file sizes, requiring more significant investments in video storage. If you’re not sure what resolution you need for your system, it’s best to call a pro or default to HD to avoid having to upgrade later.
Field of View
Depending on the layout of your home, you may need wide-angle cameras in some areas and narrow in others. There is no real cost difference in buying a wide-angle camera vs. a narrow angle. Since wide viewing angles are typically used for covering large areas, like an open yard or parking lot, you’ll need fewer cameras. Wider fields of view allow a camera to capture more but at the cost of object size. Objects in wide angle lenses appear to have a fishbowl effect. making them appear smaller and slightly distorted. When picture quality is an issue, using multiple units with a narrow viewing angle is more appropriate. A smaller field of view is better for specific targets, like doors, gates, and windows.
Motion Detection
Motion detectors are often a part of a comprehensive security system. They reduce power requirements and can be used to alert you and a monitoring service of a potential problem. A typical motion detector camera will cost less than a standard one, running about $15 to $150before installation costs. A standalone motion detector costs between $20 and $50. When hooked up, they allow recording only when motion is detected reducing power usage and data storage needs. They can also be connected to lights and alarms both inside and outside your home. External motion sensors often get tripped accidentally by blown debris and animals. Some cameras with integrated motion detecting don’t start recording quickly enough, missing possible intruders.
Night Vision and Infrared Illuminator
Standard night vision is the amplification of available light, like moonlight and streetlights. Infrared (IR) imaging uses the infrared light given off by heated sources. This light isn’t visible to the human eye, but an IR camera sees it and converts it to the visible light spectrum. Infrared illuminators, those little red lights, emit IR light. IR cameras give a higher quality picture than standard night vision. You can go one step further and purchase a separate IR illuminator to flood a larger area. These run between $15 to $90.
Monitored Security Services
Monitored services range from $30 to $65 monthly with initial setup fees ranging from $0 to $200. These services add an additional layer of protection to your home security system. Most current monitored systems are wireless and provide smart home features, like remote lighting, heating, and even door lock controls. For this additional monthly charge, your home will be monitored 24 hours a day, alerting you and the authorities to any disturbance including fires.
Audio Surveillance
Cameras with microphone setups are only a few dollars more than those without audio capabilities. Adding them after a system is already installed is usually easy and inexpensive. They run between $10 to $30 each. A few states have two-party consent laws for recording conversations. These laws require either the consent of the person you’re recording or visibly posting that audio recording is occurring on the premises. Check with your local and state laws before installing any audio equipment. Speak with a professional to make sure you add the correct legal equipment to your system.
Electronic Health Tips
Quality sleep is especially important for young children whose brains and bodies require at least 10 hours of sleep a night.
According to The National Sleep Foundation, “30 percent of elementary school children and over 50 percent of middle and high school students failed to get their nightly sleep requirement.”
There are different theories on how exactly screens are disturbing our sleep patterns. Some argue that increased time with screens cuts into our time of physical activity, making us full of energy even when it comes time to sleep. Other arguments claim that at times, the light from screens can overstimulate our brains, which affects our ability to calm down at bedtime. However, there are some solutions on how to use our screens and devices in ways that won’t affect our quality of sleep.
Consider implementing some of these tips into your family’s nightly routine for better, more consistent sleep:
- Put away screens before bedtime: Try setting a limit on the duration and time of day your family uses their devices. Putting screens away at least an hour before bedtime will give your children adequate time to calm down and get prepared for sleep.
- Make the bedroom a peaceful place: Some families choose to restrict screens in the bedroom. Cell phones, e-readers, tablets, and other devices are kept in a communal space, which leaves the bedroom a place for resting. This can help kids from feeling tempted to use their devices at bedtime.
- Practice Consistency: When it comes to getting enough sleep, consistency is best, especially for children. Consider talking with your children about setting a consistent sleep schedule including specific times for bedtime and waking up. Life can be chaotic, but setting a schedule will help increase the quality of sleep our children are getting each night.
Navigating the best practices of screens and other devices can be difficult, especially for parents! But when it comes to quality sleep, the less technology the better. Remember to turn off those screens and wake up rested and ready for the day.

Important Questions to ask a computer repair business
“What is your hourly rate? / How much do you charge per hour?”
Asking the cost of a service is a normal question that most people forget to ask and are shocked at the bill after the services are completed. Never wait till until it’s time to pay the bill to find out how much per hour you’ll be paying.
Acceptable Answer: “We charge between $50 to $75 an hour.”
Reason: Rates vary upon project, and so do the charges along with them. Some companies charge hourly, and some companies charger per service. Most do both because the cost is averaged in the time it takes to do the job that they have done many times over. $50 to $75 USD per hour is average. Sometimes companies will go to $100 an hour, but to much higher than that and chances are you are getting ripped off.
“How many hours will this take to fix?”
You don’t want to find out it took 10 hours hours at $75 an hour to fix your computer. When a mew computer’s cost could be purchased with the money spent on an old PC. Having at least some idea of how much the grand total will be is important, but any good service should be able to give you an idea before breaking the bank.
Acceptable Answer:“I’m not 100% sure of the problem, but normally things like this can take about X number of hours to fix.”
Reason: If they haven’t looked at the computer yet, a computer repair service can tell you with absolute certainty how many billable hours something like your scenario might take. If it is a reputable company they may just charge a diagnostic fee, and inform you of your problem BEFORE they fix anything.
If all you need is a simple hardware replacement (bad memory or hard drive) or software installation, you might be quoted a specific amount, but otherwise, you should expect a little flexibility on the their answer.
“Do you have a minimum charge?”
Not all problems take hours to repair. A repair service might only spend 10 to 15 minutes solving a particular problem. If your problem happens to be one of these “quick fixes” you should be aware of how you’ll be charged for it.
Acceptable Answer: “Yes, minimum diagnostic fee is to one billable hour minimum.”
Reason: Most computer repair services will charge 1 hour of labor for any time up to one hour spent working on your PC. This is sometimes called a diagnostic fee or minimum bench charge and is completely customary.
“Any extra charges other than the hourly rate?”
Many services we pay for in life are filled with hidden fees. That $24.99 oil change ends up costing close to $50 after they add in all the waste disposal fees, ect.
Acceptable Answer: “No.”
Reason: It is not common practice for a computer repair service to charge extra fees for their standard services. Obviously, if you require replacement hardware or a new piece of software, you should expect to pay for it but you should not expect any sort of hidden fees or surcharges. If you are having equipment installed like network drops, terminating network cable and having wall plates installed, expect some sort of accessories or parts fee.
If you’re told that there are extra fees, be sure to see a list of them in writing before leaving your PC or requesting service in your home or business.
“Do you charge extra for on-site / in home calls?”
National chain computer repair services, in-store, and in-home/in-business repair services are considered completely separate services. You should always be aware of any billing differences between these services before getting your computer repaired.
Answer should be: “Yes, we do charge [a small extra fee or slightly higher hourly rate] for in-home and in business service.”
Caution: If you’re quoted a rate doubled to the normal rate for in-home/business computer repair service, don’t get it. Take your computer to their shop or find another computer repair service. You should expect a repair service to charge a small fee to visit you – perhaps a $10 to $20 USD single “trip” charge or a 10-20% hourly rate increase.
Some computer repair services may not charge anything extra at all for this service. Do not take it as a sign of a low-quality service, just consider yourself lucky!
“Do offer a service guarantee?”
It’s important to know whether or not you can expect a guaranty on the services provided. No one wants to get their computer serviced again two weeks later for the same problem.
For example, if you received an error message like “Windows cannot find C:\Windows\System32\ rundll32.exe ” and the computer repair service corrected the problem for you two weeks ago, it’s reasonable to expect that, at least in the near future, the problem will not happen again.
Answer should be: “Yes. For most problems, we guarantee our service for [30 to 90] days.”
Reason: Anything less than 30 days isn’t a good deal. If a computer repair service offers more than a 90-day guarantee, be sure to read the fine print to see what sorts of problems it covers before you choose that particular service.
In regards to “most computer problems”, don’t expect a computer repair service to remove a virus from your computer and then guarantee that you won’t be infected by it again. Yes, they should make sure your antivirus program is updated, and that you have all the latest operating system updates for your computer, but they can’t do anything about you visiting the same malicious sites and possibly getting infected again.
Important: No reputable computer repair service will guarantee a satisfactory solution to your PC problem before they have even had a chance to look at the computer. You should always be prepared to pay the minimum diagnostic fee or bench charge even if your computer couldn’t be repaired in the way you expected.
“Will you save my files?”
Your computer itself is really just a complex collection of replaceable parts. It’s the term papers, photos of your dog, and the baby’s first steps video that is really important.
Answer should be: “Yes. If they’re there, we’ll save them for you.”
Caution: Very serious issues with your hard drive may result in your files being lost forever. This doesn’t happen very often and, of course, would be out of the control of the computer repair service. There are alternative methods to retrieving these files. Some are supported by the hard drive manufacturer where you can send your drive off and they can do some mechanical magic in swapping internal parts of your hard drive to get the data off.. warning.. that can get expensive.
Keeping your files backed up, either with a cloud backup service or manually with backup software, is always a very good idea and removes the answer to this question as a concern.
“When will it be ready? Or When will I be able to pick up my computer? “
If you’re getting in-home or in business service, a related question would be “When might you be able to come out to my home/business?”.
Answer should be: “You should be able to pick up your PC in 24 to 48 hours.”
The “correct” answer to this question is really up to your personal schedule and expectations. I say 24 to 48 hours because that’s the average response. If you’re quoted “any earlier time than 24 hours” that doesn’t mean that the computer repair service isn’t a good one. That is the answer most people are looking for! If the response is something along the lines of “a week from today” and that’s a satisfactory answer to you, then great. If not, I recommend looking elsewhere.
